Can you tell if someone takes a screenshot of your document?

Updated November 6, 2026. By Vela Partners.

Yes. When you share a document through ArtifactSend, you get an email when a reader likely takes a screenshot, with who it was, which page they were on and their device. The reader is not told. The first 10 alerts are free, then it is $10 a month.

The short answer

A normal PDF, Google Doc or email attachment cannot tell you anything. Once it is sent, any screenshot is invisible to you.

A document shared as a link that opens in the browser can do better. The page can notice the moment a reader presses a screenshot shortcut or starts printing. ArtifactSend uses this to send you an alert, quietly, while your reader keeps reading.

It is a strong signal, not proof. That is why the alert says likely. Read what it catches and what it cannot below.

What the alert tells you

Each catch also shows on the reader's row in the link report. One email per visit, so a reader who takes five screenshots in a minute sends you one alert that counts all five.

Why the reader is not told

A warning on screen changes nothing for someone who already has the image, and it teaches them to use their phone next time. A quiet alert keeps the signal for you. You decide whether to follow up, revoke the link, or simply note that this reader is serious enough to save your numbers.

Readers are told what is recorded in our privacy policy, and as the sender you are responsible for any notice your law requires.

What it catches, and what no tool can catch

No browser-based product can see those. Anyone who says they block every screenshot is overselling, and DocSend and Papermark both say so on their own pages. The answer for the gaps is a watermark with each reader's email on every page, which ArtifactSend adds for free. A photo of the screen then still names who leaked it.

How other tools handle screenshots

Most tools try to stop the screenshot rather than tell you about it. DocSend's screenshot protection blacks the page out when the cursor leaves it, on its Advanced plans. Peony blocks captures from its Business plan. Digify hides or blurs the file when it detects an attempt. Papermark says it detects and logs capture attempts on its Business plan. None of their pages list an alert to the sender naming the reader, as of November 6, 2026.

Turn it on

  1. Share your document from artifactsend.com, or ask ChatGPT or Claude to send it with the ArtifactSend connector.
  2. Choose a door that names the reader, such as an email code or Google sign-in. An anonymous reader cannot be named.
  3. Keep the watermark on for anything sensitive. Screenshot alerts are on for every link already.
  4. When an alert arrives, open the reader's row to see what they read before and after.

What it costs

Screenshot protection, the watermark and the download switch are free. Screenshot alerts name the reader for your first 10 catches, free. After that you still hear that a screenshot likely happened, and the $10 a month Screenshot alerts plan shows who and where, including the ones caught before you turned it on. Cancel any time from Billing.

Share your next document as a link that tells you who read it.

Does DocSend tell you when someone takes a screenshot?

DocSend's help page describes screenshot protection that blacks out the page on its Advanced plans. It does not list an alert to the sender, as of November 6, 2026.

No. Nothing changes on their screen. Only you get the alert.

Can it catch a photo taken with a phone?
