How to share a ChatGPT canvas, and what to use now that it is gone
Canvas is no longer in GPT-5.5 Instant or GPT-5.5 Thinking. ChatGPT's share link opens for anyone who has it, with no expiry and no record of who read it. Here is how to share ChatGPT work privately, with a report of who opened it.

The short answer
OpenAI removed canvas from GPT-5.5 Instant and GPT-5.5 Thinking on May 28, 2026. Drafts now live in writing blocks and code in code blocks, inside the chat. To share them, ChatGPT gives you a share link to the conversation.
That link opens for anyone who has it, when it comes from a personal account. It has no expiry and no list of who opened it. To share the work privately and know who read it, copy the page or the draft into ArtifactSend, pick who can open it, and send that link instead. It is free.
What happened to canvas
Canvas was the side panel where you edited a document or code with ChatGPT. OpenAI added canvas sharing on February 6, 2025, so you could share a rendered React or HTML page, a document or code from the canvas toolbar.
On May 28, 2026, OpenAI's release notes said canvas would no longer be available in GPT-5.5 Instant or GPT-5.5 Thinking. Writing and coding now happen in writing blocks and code blocks in the chat. Paid users can still open canvas through legacy models for a limited time, until those models are retired.

How to share from ChatGPT itself
To change what the link shows, open Share again and select Update link. Messages you add later are not included until you do.
- Open the conversation.
- Select Share.
- Check the preview. It can include the whole conversation, one response, images and files you uploaded.
- Select Create link or Copy link.
- Send the link. It starts with chatgpt.com/share.
Why a ChatGPT link is not private
- From a personal account, anyone who has the link can open it, and anyone can forward it.
- OpenAI says shared links have no per-person access controls and no expiry date.
- OpenAI says shared pages are not meant to be indexed by search engines, and adds that this does not make a link private.
- The reader sees your whole conversation, not only the finished page or draft, unless you share a single response.
- Nothing tells you if the person opened it, or how much they read.
Share ChatGPT work privately in two minutes
The reader sees only the page or the draft, not your chat. HTML pages stay interactive, so charts, tabs and calculators keep working.
- For a page ChatGPT built, open the code block and copy the code. Save it as a file ending in .html. For a draft in a writing block, copy the text into a document, or save it as Markdown.
- Go to artifactsend.com and sign in with Google.
- Drop in the file.
- Choose who can open it. Email code is the safest for one person, and an allow list works for a company domain.
- Set an expiry date if the reader only needs it this week, and turn on the first-open alert.
- Copy the link and send it.
Or ask ChatGPT to send it
On ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu on the web, you can connect ArtifactSend as an app. Then say "send this page to dana@fund.com as a tracked link, only she can open it". ChatGPT sends the page, and later you can ask "who read it, and for how long?" in the same chat. Setup steps are on the Claude and ChatGPT page at artifactsend.com/mcp.
Can I password protect a ChatGPT shared link?
No. ChatGPT links have no password. ArtifactSend has no password either. It uses an email code instead, so each view is tied to a real inbox rather than a shared secret that can be forwarded.
Can I see who viewed my ChatGPT link?
No. OpenAI's sharing help lists no view count and no viewer list. An ArtifactSend link shows each reader by email, every visit, how far they read and time on each section.
How do I stop someone seeing a link I already sent?
Deleting stops future visits. It does not remove a copy the reader already continued in their own account. In ArtifactSend, turn the link off or let it expire, and the report keeps the visits that already happened.
- In ChatGPT, open Settings, then Data controls.
- Next to Shared links, select Manage.
- Select Delete shared link for the one you want to stop.
