# How to see if someone opened your PDF

> You cannot see whether someone opened a PDF attachment. You can see it when you send the PDF as a tracked link. Here is how each method works and what it proves.

## The short answer

An email attachment cannot tell you if it was opened. Once the PDF is on the reader's device, it opens in their own app and sends nothing back to you.

To know, send the PDF as a link instead. The link opens the file in a web viewer, which records who opened it, when, and how long they spent on each page.

## Why read receipts do not answer it

A read receipt, where your email app offers one, reports that the email was opened. It is sent only when the reader agrees. It says nothing about the attachment.

Email tracking pixels have the same limit. They load an image in the email, not in the PDF. Some mail apps block images or load them on their own, so the signal can be wrong.

## Methods that work, and what each proves

- A tracked link with an email door. It shows which email address opened the PDF, and the time on each page.
- A tracked link with an email code. It proves the reader controls that inbox, not only that they typed it.
- A Google Drive link shared with specific people. Its Activity dashboard shows viewers for work or school accounts and signed-in viewers, without time per page.
- Asking. A short note that asks whether the PDF came through still works.

## See who opened your PDF with ArtifactSend

1. Sign in at artifactsend.com with Google or an email code. No card.
2. Drop in the PDF.
3. Pick a door. Email asks for an address, and email code proves it.
4. Turn on the alert for the first open.
5. Send the link instead of the attachment.

## What the report shows

- Each reader by email, with the time of the first open.
- How many times they came back.
- Active reading time, which leaves out idle time.
- Time on each page, and how far they got.
- A replay of each visit.

## Be open about it

Tell readers the link is tracked. One line in your email is enough, and it keeps their trust.

## Questions

**Can you tell if someone opened a PDF attachment?**

No. A PDF attachment opens in the reader's own app and sends nothing back. Send the PDF as a tracked link to see who opened it.

**Do read receipts work for attachments?**

No. A read receipt reports the email, not the attachment, and only when the reader agrees to send it.

**Can I see how long someone read my PDF?**

Yes, with a tracked link. ArtifactSend shows active reading time and time on each page for each reader.

**Is there a free way to track a PDF?**

Yes. ArtifactSend is free for links, readers, reader doors and analytics. Papermark and Peony have free plans limited to 50 documents.

**Will the reader know?**

They see a short door that asks for an email or a code, based on the door you pick. Telling them in your email is good practice.
